“Achy Breaky Heart” is a well-known song. It peaked at number 4 on the Billboard top 100 in 1992.  It became the first country single to be certified Platinum since Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream” in 1983. It is even credited for the explosion of line dance into the mainstream, thanks to the video of this hit.Don Von Tress first wrote the song, “Achy Breaky Heart” in 1990. The Oak Ridge Boys were going to perform this song in the early 1990s, they decided against it after the lead singer Duane Allen said he didn’t like the words “Achy Breaky”. The Marcy Brother then performed this song in 1991 and named it, “Don’t Tell My Heart.” Not all of the lyrics matched the original song when it was performed. It was later changed to “Achy Breaky Heart” again in 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus performed it. This song became Cyrus’s debut single and signature song. The song made him famous and has since been his most successful song. After being featured on Top of the Pops in the United Kingdom, the single topped many countries. The song remains Cyrus’s only song to reach the top ten of Billboard Hot 100 and is still his biggest hit. Although he never came close to an “Achy” style hit again, Billy Ray Cyrus went on to a solid career with plenty of commercial success. His second album debuted at #3 and went platinum. He turned to acting roles when his singing career stalled.By featuring at number two in VH1 and Blender’s list of the “50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever, the song is considered by some as one of the worst songs of all time. Even, Rolling Stone named the line-dance anthem the third worst song of the nineties. Their allegations are based on his relationship with his well-known daughter, Miley Cyrus. They say she was exploited in many ways. She’s starred in many shows such as Hannah Montana. They claim being famous as a child can cause severe mental and emotional damage. The haters blame Cyrus for turning his daughter to the repulsive producers and agents who wanted to turn Miley into a star. They accuse Cyrus of benefiting financially from Miley’s talent. Although some of these claims may be valid, most of them have nothing to do with the song. Their say that Billy Ray Cyrus didn’t write the song himself and he didn’t sing it well either. They also say that it shouldn’t count as a country song since it had a faster beat to it. Either way, the song still became very successful.    There have been many parodies and references to this song. Most of the references are from Hannah Montana. For example, in the episode “The Way We Almost Weren’t”, Robby Stewart, Cyrus’s character, is seen trying to write lyrics to  “Achy Breaky Heart” in a cafe in New Mexico. He tries many lyrics such as ‘herky-jerky heart” and “itchy twitchy heart” but is unhappy. Jackson, another character in the show, suggests to use “Achy Breaky”, but Rob thought it was the stupidest thing ever. It was even covered by Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1992 on Chipmunks in Low Places. Featuring speaking parts from Billy himself, this version topped 71 on Billboard Hot 100 Country Songs.    “Achy Breaky Heart” is a legendary song. It is famed for starting the line dance, but the artist is also discredited. The song will always be remembered in the hearts of the people of the ’90s. “Achy Breaky Heart” is a legendary song.
